Re: What do I know about football?
What a performance. What a day. One of the best away days i have had.

I, like Croe was livid after thursday and had big questions over Bilic's decisions and outlook.

How wrong was i, i said he had to deliver after throwing away the europa and boy did he. We was superb yesterday, yes Arsenal were not 100% but we deserve alot of credit.

Adrian was outstanding, i have always said he is good enough and yesterday proved that in bucket loads. A great shot stopper and the fact his family were just below us in the stand made it very enjoyable to see how much it meant to them too.

Defence was very solid, Ogbonna in particular i was very impressed with. Strong, composed and read the game excellently, Giroud was taken out of the game by him. Thought Cresswell could of got forward a bit more, and thought Tomkins played well in a unfamiliar role.

Midfield, Oxford was brilliant, what a performance to do that at 16. A world cup winner in his pocket all game......who needs Song ay. Noble and Kouyate energy and ability to break up play caused them alot of frustration and for them to start forcing it which is when the loose passes started to happen. Payet we all know is special now, I was skeptical when we signed him. I was wrong, on what he has shown so far he looks like he could be one of the signings of the season. Keep him fit and he will put chances on a plate for our front players.

Sakho was the unsung hero yesterday, he didnt stop running, putting thier back four under pressure and being a outlet to allow us to move up the pitch when they were searching for a goal back at 2-0. Again keep him fit and he will get 10+ goals this year no doubt about it.

What was very nice to see too was a manager look a game and have tactics to approach it correctly. Credit to Bilic, the Jarvis change was a reaction to the game so far and was good tactics, so refreshing to see.

Finally the fans, i have always said we will never have the best team in the world but we are one of the best clubs to support. The reaction when the players walked over to clap the team off was outstanding, every single person in that away end was a credit to the club.

A great day, an even better result and a huge hats off to Mr Bilic and the players.

2 big games next, which could put us in a good position to really kick on.

COYI

Well. I suppose that had we sent the 1st team to Romania they would not have had the time to work on the game plan that got us our first win at Arsenal in yonks. Shame we had to forgo EL but always next season...

Is it too early for that 'bold' statement?

Thursday was still a fuck up and yesterday was just one game. We had a fantastic start last season too didn't we?

Very happy about yesterday and the style but still way too early to be making bold statements.

Re: What do I know about football?
Leicester played well at weekend and from what I saw it looks like Ranieri has got them playing in the same way they finished the season. Will be a very tough game.

But, after yesterday we have to be confident at beating them at home. The players must be buzzing and training this week should be very enjoyable. What a great way to go into your first home game with a performance like that under your belt.

Alf

absolutely, people were knee jerking last week and they have to be careful not to do the same this week, there was some fantastic positives yesterday and e have a great start to build from that will give everyone confidence. what we need to do now is put in a performance and get a result at home to leicester and start to get some momentum going like we had in the first half of last season. COYI!

Re: What do I know about football?
Takes 10 games for the season to start taking shape and like the thread title I too had thought we would get our normal defeat to Arsenal. Tactically Bilic outfoxed Wenger and the Europey league may well have given us an edge in terms of sharpness but not sure because the first team players only played one game and a half our of 6 I think?

So as a 55 year+ sufferer I only want to caution everyone to wait a few games to see how things pa out. Leicester at home will be a game where we will need to take the game to them and perhaps be more open to the counter attack. Typical West Ham would be to struggle with what looks to be an easier game. They are also perhaps a better team this season? Anyway, very pleased of course with our opening game but will keep expectations in check for a while yet. We still need at least 2 more players. One wide right and a forward minimum. IMHO.

Re: What do I know about football?
As someone who wasn't bothered about Europe but who hates his London rivals, I'm glad bilic was vindicated and it wasn't half nice seeing us play football again instead of hoofball.

Every player stood up to be counted and the most pleasing thing with payet other than his obvious class, was his work rate off the ball.

As for Oxford, we'd better start preparing ourselves for some serious bids next summer!!

Hear Hear.

I was annoyed by Thursday and think it was a mistake, but we did at least get the win today and it's massive congratulations to the manager and the players.

Can't understand some of the doom and gloom and relegation talk that's been going around here in the last week. We DO have a good squad and some very talented players (and have done for a few years), despite what some people seem to think.

It's a new era at the club. It's time for people to drop their fixations and comparisons with the last manager. I'm guilty of a bit of that with regard to Thursday and squad selection, but it's time to draw a line and look to the future.

Croe,
Well said mate, the way we looked so comfortable with the ball was from a different era and let's hope we carry it on,watching on a small TV in a Spanishbar was not perfect but I could see enough to be very impressed and loved the way no one panicked when put Nader pressure.

All I have ever asked of us is to give anyone a game and I know it's only one but fuck me it looks like we may just have the man who can set out his side to just do that.
